Uchi Deshi / JenChi (Inner Students)

In keeping with the spirit and tradition of Shorin Kempo, The Sth East Asian International School Of Martial Arts offers an Uchi Deshi Program for serious Martial Arts students. The Uchi Deshi program enables students to live and practice at the dojo. Long-term live-in student programs are available on a three-month semester basis. Interested students can apply to the Honbu for further information.

Being an Uchi Deshi (formerly know as Jenchi in Chinese) is one of the greatest honors a Student can have , as it means that you go down in history as one of the very few who are accepted into the inner circle of the Shorin Kempo family. More is expected of an Uchi Deshi as the honor of  the system often rest on their shoulders, therefore intern more is expected of them in the dojo as well.

shorin kempo uchi deshi barefoot run1987The Uchi Deshi program was first introduced by Sifu in 1984 and has always been part of the heart and soul of our Dojo. Many don’t pass the Uchi Deshi program , many drop out due to the commitment required to pass this course, It reall takes a special beed to be an uchideshi.

Normally the 1 year Uchi Deshi programe is only reserved for Brown belts (1st Khu) upward. Many Students from different styles holding the level of 1st or 2nd Khu apply to do the 1000 hr Uchi Deshi program hoping to obtain a Shodan in Shorin Kempo so as to pen their own Dojo’s around the world .

The Course is under the direct Supervision of Sifu who is the Kancho for Shorin Kempo and the World Kumite Organization.


 

What Is Uchi Deshi

The word Uchi Deshi translates in English to mean “live-in student or Inner Student.” A student who joins in an Uchi Deshiprogram lives at a dojo not only to train—every part of his or her daily life becomes part of the training as well. Traditionally in Japan and China, this kind of training the martial arts has been available only to those students who were genuine about dedicating their time to the art of Shorin Kempo and to excel beyond that which is deemed to be normal.

At Honbu, Uchi Deshi students practice Kempo daily—usually two classes per day (one in the art of fighting , ie muay Thai , Karate, boxing , kumite etc and other in traditional Shorin kempo plus special training classes which are often held at the Military Police Academy Dojo. Uchi Deshi training does not end on the tatame (mat), however, and live-in students also participate daily in various duties from dojo maintenance (including cooking and cleaning) to assisting in dojo operations and special projects. Presently, the Honbu can accommodate and house up to ten Uchi Deshi or Jen Chi.

uchi deshi shorin 1996The Honbu is set on 1 hectare of land in Central Pattaya, Uchi Deshiare given a motorbike to get around on if required , and actually live at the dojo in the Uchi Deshi lodgings which is in a bunk system .

Uchi Deshi who qualify are also eligible to join will be treated to an experience in learning martial arts second to none.

Uchi Deshi at Shorin Kempo practice on an average, about five times as much as regular attending students during the same period of time. Uchi Deshiusually develop a proficiency very quickly in their kempo, while simultaneously learning teaching and administrative skills.

The challenge of life as an uUchi Deshi chideshi is one that must be chosen by the individual. Accepting this responsibility leads to valuable development through training that is useful for a lifetime. Over 97 students from all over the world have participated in Uchi Deshiprogram under Sifu Kancho and only 38% manage to complete this physically demanding program. It is Common knowledge in the Japanese martial arts and knock down tournaments that the shorin kempo honbu has produced some of the created some of the worlds best karate fighters fighting on the Japanese tournament circuits today.

Uchi DeshiEnrollment requirements

Joining the Uchi Deshirequires a positive attitude in order to be succesfull in completing uchideshi.

  • Both men and women are eligible.
  • Applicants must be between 18 and 35 years of age.
  • Healthy physical condition and the ability to train daily.
  • Individual health insurance in good standing.
  • Financial capability to support oneself for the length of the designated term.
  • Religious and other lifestyle preferences are private and should be kept to yourself.

As a result, all members are expected to respect these differences and not act in any manner which might cause discomfort or offence to other members.

The Honbu reserves the right to refuse anyone from participating at the dojo in the interest of safety and welfare of other students and regular members.

Promtions

If student enters the program as a colored belt, After 100 days grade will increase by 1(one) grade.

If student enters the program as a colored belt, After 200 days grade will increase by 2(two) grades.

If student enters the program as a colored belt, After 1 year student will obtain the Rank of Shodan

If student enters the program as a colored belt, After 3 years student will obtain the Rank of 2nd Dan and recive a liscence to open a Shorin Kempo Kaikan Dojo

If student enters the program as a Shodan, After 100 days No promotion

If student enters the program as a Shodan, After 200 days No promotion

If student enters the program as a Shodan, After 1 year student will obtain the Rank of 2nd Dan and receive a liscence to open a Shorin Kempo Kaikan Dojo

If student enters the program as a Shodan, After 3 years student will obtain the Rank of 3rd Dan and receive a Branch Chief Liscense

 

 Meals and Personal Expenses

 

Due to different requirements for meals the Uchi Deshi program does not include meals , however meals at the dojo range from 30 baht or $1 upward as the cost of living is very cheap in Thailand, There are grocery stores and laundry facilities within walking distance from the Honbu and kitchen facilities on the premises if you wish to cook yourself.. Other personal expenses such as laundry are each individual’s responsibility.
